Introduction to Route setting is a 1.5-day course aimed at those who have an interest in route setting and a passion for climbing. Thursday evening we will section off a quadrant, strip a wall and you will familiarise yourself with tools and cleaning holds for use the next day. We will discuss the importance of grade varieties, safety, colour, shape and texture of hold selection, efficiency and work space maintenance. We start early on the Friday, drinking coffee and looking at our blank canvas. We work as a team to perform safety checks, build ground anchors and select our working area. You will be under the guidance of Dan Geddes, ACMG Rock Guide who will encourage you to think creatively, consider spacial awareness, work mindfully in making problems for climbers with varying experience and ability. Then the best part....climbing the routes, tweaking them and experimenting with forcing movement and route reading. Course content includes: Route setter safety Equipment and tool usage Plenty of route setting and testing time Discussion and coaching on your setting skills Hold attachment an Hold Selection Fundamental route setting techniques. An introduction to creative route setting techniques Following the completion of the course you will be able to sign up to help the team on certain route-setting days. Prerequisites: Ability to climb V3, Age 18+, competent and signed off belayer.
